授業意図 This course is an extension of Interpersonal Communication I. It aims to deepen students’ understanding of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) by applying sociolinguistic concepts to real-world communication in Kanazawa. Moving beyond native-speaker norms, students critically examine how English functions in local tourism settings, particularly in small traditional shops. Through field observation, international COIL collaboration, data analysis, and collaborative design, students develop practical and critical awareness of how English can be used effectively, accessibly, and confidently in multilingual environments.

<IMPORTANT NOTES>
1. This course will be conducted fully in English.
Students are expected to participate in discussions, group work, and presentations in English, and to engage actively in an English-medium academic environment.

2. Lecture slides will not be distributed.
Since the course emphasises critical observation and analytical thinking, active note-taking is considered an essential academic skill. Therefore, students are expected to take their own notes during class and to review them regularly as part of their independent learning.
科目の具体目標 By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of English as an international lingua franca and explain how English functions beyond native-speaker norms in global communication contexts.

2. Communicate effectively and appropriately with international peers in English at a level approaching CEFR B2, demonstrating clarity, adaptability, and interactional competence.

3. Analyse communication practices in local tourism settings and evaluate how English is used to represent regional culture to international audiences.

4. Collect, organise, and analyse real-world linguistic data through field observation and collaborative inquiry.

5. Identify communication challenges in small traditional shops and propose practical, evidence-based solutions.

6. Design and present a Simple English Toolkit that enables effective intercultural communication between local businesses and international visitors.

7. Reflect critically on cultural differences, values, and communication styles encountered through COIL interaction and fieldwork.
